The 4th of July is just around the corner. BBQs, parades, fireworks, friends, families and parties will be in abundance. As you celebrate Independence Day, remember to be smart, be mindful and drive defensively. Do not drink and drive, and remember you can’t enjoy the significance of this holiday from a jail cell.
Avoid Alcohol-Related Car Accidents This Fourth of July
The Fourth of July weekend is notorious for being the deadliest holiday for alcohol-related auto crashes. In 2020, the California Highway Patrol (CHP) made 738 DUI arrests statewide over the 4th of July holiday weekend. In addition, there were at least 36 auto accident fatalities during last year’s holiday. Of those who were killed in alcohol involved auto accidents, about 25 percent were not wearing seatbelts.
Because it is a holiday weekend, law enforcement agencies ramp up their number of patrol units and DUI checkpoints in attempts to deter DUI (Driving Under the Influence) or BUI (Boating Under the Influence).
Tips to Avoid Fourth of July Car Accidents
Three tips to avoid Fourth of July car accidents include:
1. Be Smart. Don’t Drink and Drive.
Most people are responsible when it comes to drinking and driving. Designate a sober driver or get a rideshare or cab. This is a smart decision.
2. Be Mindful. Do Not Text and Drive, and Drive Defensively.
Be careful driving and be very aware of other drivers. Avoid distracted driving. Stay alert and remember the hours between 12 midnight and 3am are the deadliest.
3. Report Drunk Drivers.
If you come across a driver who you suspect is driving under the influence, report him or her. Pull over to a safe spot and call 9-1-1.
Celebrate Independence Day the Right Way
The CHP tweeted last year, “However you choose to celebrate the holiday, do it without putting yourself or others at risk.”
