The 4th of July is just around the corner. BBQs, parades, fireworks, friends, families and parties will be in abundance. As you celebrate Independence Day remember to be smart, be mindful & drive defensively, don’t drink & drive and remember you can’t enjoy the significance of this holiday from a jail cell.
The Fourth of July weekend is the deadliest holiday for alcohol-related crashes. The CHP made 747 DUI arrests statewide over the 4th of July holiday weekend last year. This number is up 32 percent during the same period in 2013.
Sadly, the California DUI increase last year meant an increase in the alcohol related traffic fatalities. In California in the first 30 hours of the holiday weekend fifteen people were killed. During the same period in 2013, only nine people died as the result of drunk driving. Of those who were killed in alcohol involved auto accidents about 40 percent were not wearing seatbelts.
Understand because it is a holiday weekend law enforcement agencies ramp up their number of patrol units and DUI checkpoints in attempts to deter DUI (Driving Under the Influence) or BUI (Boating Under the Influence).
1) Be Smart, Don’t Drink & Drive
Most people are responsible when it comes to drinking and driving.
They designate a sober driver or they call a cab. This is a smart decision.
2) Be Mindful, Don’t Text and Drive & Drive Defensively
Be careful driving and be very aware of other drivers. Stay alert and remember the hours between 12 midnight and 3am are the deadliest.
Report Drunk Drivers – Call 911
3) Celebrate Independence Day Right
The CHP tweeted last year, “You can’t celebrate your freedom in a jail cell.”
